OBSIDIAN

Born of fire

Natural volcanic glass, shaped by the forces of the earth. Reimagined by Gie El as sculptural light.

Before it was black, it was molten

Obsidian begins deep within the earth, in molten volcanic rock. As silica-rich lava solidifies into natural glass, a remarkable material emerges — dark, dense, and unlike ordinary stone.

Black is never just black

Look closer.

Beneath the deep volcanic black lie subtle variations, irregular textures, and fleeting reflections.

Every fragment has its own character. Every surface reveals something different as the light changes.

Nature creates the forms
We find their rhythm

At Gie El, fragments of natural obsidian become part of a carefully considered composition.

Shapes, distances, and proportions come together through a dialogue between the material and the artist’s intuition.

What begins as separate pieces becomes a sculptural whole.

One material
Different expressions

From expansive organic compositions to slender, cascading silhouettes, the OBSIDIAN collection explores different ways of bringing volcanic glass into dialogue with architecture.

Each installation finds its own rhythm, scale, and relationship with the space around it.

Some stories are best experienced in person

OBSIDIAN brings depth, contrast, and a subtle sense of movement to an interior.

Its dark, organic forms engage with the surrounding architecture, creating a sculptural presence that can feel both intimate and monumental.

Crafted at the Gie El Studio

Every OBSIDIAN chandelier is handcrafted in our studio in Poland. We work with natural obsidian, carefully Wybierzing and arranging individual fragments into sculptural lighting compositions.

Alongside the existing collection, we also create bespoke installations, adapting their dimensions, proportions, and arrangement to the specific space.

This allows us to work together on a composition that responds to the character and scale of each interior.

The weight of stone
The feeling of air

Suspended on exceptionally fine optical fibers, the volcanic fragments appear to float freely in space.

The supporting threads almost disappear, leaving only the quiet presence of dark matter held in light.

Light as Sculpture

We create sculptural light objects that engage in a dialogue with space.

We explore how light and shadow interact with form, architecture, and the human presence.

Light reveals what darkness holds

Light gently touches the obsidian, revealing fleeting reflections across its natural surface.

A change of perspective, a different moment of the day — and something new becomes visible.

The material never loses its mystery.
